As a therapist and researcher, I am engaged with the literature on complementary therapies and holistic health. As part of my dissertation I wrote a systematic review entitled: 'The Clinical Evidence-Base for the Use of Massage & Foot Reflexology in Integrative Oncology' (2023). Read here.
Outcomes of this paper showed the effectiveness of massage and reflexology for:

History of Reflexology: Reflexology is an ancient practice with an interesting history. It appears to have evolved from China, Egypt and North American indigenous tribes (Hart 2015). In Europe a form of reflexology was practiced as far back as the 14th century. Eunice Ingham (1889-1974) the 'Mother of Reflexology' created a foot map of the body reflected on the feet, which was based on her research. So successful was her work she is now recognised as the founder of foot reflexology.
Reflexology is the study of how one part of the human body relates to another part of the body by 'reflexes' on the feet which are stimulated by systematic pressures to the feet on specific areas. There are numerous theories about how reflexology actually works such as the 'haemodynamic theory' (how blood flows through the body). More recently, research into fascia (connective tissue) may offer more insights into the mechanism of action involved in the practice of reflexology. (Whatley 2022). Importantly, as part of my studies in massage and reflexology there are no recorded adverse effects associated with reflexology.
Benefits of Reflexology: Research shows how reflexology has been shown to be useful for many different problems including headaches, joint pain, musculo-skeletal problems, pregnancy and labour pain, oedema (swelling), cancer pain, and providing relief from stroked, asthma, diabetes, and multiple sclerosis (Cai 2022). Reflexology has demonstrated beneficial affects on pain, mental health, quality of life and stress (McCullough 2014).
History of Massage: Massage also extends back thousands of years to ancient China, India and Egypt. Massage is one of the oldest complementary therapies offering a drug-free, non-invasive and humanistic approach (Pan 2014).
Benefits of Massage: Current data suggest that massage may have some benefit in treating depression and anxiety at least as an adjuvant to conventional therapies (Rapaort 2018). Many contemporary studies have found that massage can reduce muscle fatigue, improve blood flow, relax mood and improve symptoms of anxiety, depression, pain and nausea (Cassileth 2004; Ernst 2009).
Both massage and reflexology have unique advantages because of their non-invasive, low-cost and safety characteristics.
Aromatherapy derived its name from the word ‘aroma’ meaning fragrance and ‘therapy’ meaning treatment (Ali 2015). Aromatherapy uses essential oils (plant extracts which are therapeutic agents) that’s come from the flowers, leaves, stalks, roots of plants and sometimes distilled from resins (bark of tree ie Benzoin). Essential oils are present in the glandular hairs, specialized cells and have the function of shielding the plant from bacterial attacks. Essential oils offer benefits to our health and well-being too – supporting our physical, mental health, emotional and spiritual health.
The routes of administration into the body are mainly:
How Aromatherapy Works:
The mechanism of action of aromatherapy is through olfaction (sense of smell). When the oils are inhaled, the signal to the brain causes a release of neuro-messengers such as serotonin, endorphins and noradrenaline. These hormones provide relief to the human body via the central nervous system. During massage, the essential oils penetrate the dermis (skin) the same way skin patches deliver nicotine into the bloodstream.
Inhalation and topical application using massage for the treatment of mental and physical balance are the very basics of aromatherapy. The essential oils, often combined with a carrier oil (fatty oil) and blended synergistically are known to reduce stress, rejuvenate and regenerate. There are specific oils that have been shown in studies to be effective for particular conditions.
Aromatherapy Benefits:
The essential oils are well proven to have anti-bacterial, anti-biotic and anti-viral properties. There are many published reports as well as practitioners who suggest the oils to be useful in diseases such as alzheimers, cardiovascular, cancer and labour pain in pregnancy (Smith 2011; Lai 2011; Jimbo 20090; Shiina 2008; Perry 2006). Aromatherapy is very useful for women during the menopause. Conrad (2019, p126) tells us that multiple aromatherapy studies have shown decrease in salivary cortisol (stress hormone) and increase in serotonin 5HT (antidepressant neurotransmitter) and oestrogen levels with inhalation and massage (Chen 2017; Hosseini 2016; Watanabe 2015; Lee 2014; Hur 2012). My passion for complementary therapies stems from basic nursing practice as far back as 2000. Learning about anatomy & physiology in nursing studies provided underpinning knowledge, and as a nursing student I became fascinated by concepts of health & wellbeing including that of 'therapeutic touch'. This led to embarking on a Diploma in Complementary Therapies (2004) where I qualified with skills in the following modalities; Clinical Reflexology, Clinical Aromatherapy, Therapeutic Body Massage and Person-Centred Counselling.
This was followed by BA Health & Wellbeing (2008) and some teaching experience at University of Highlands & Islands. In 2015 I completed bio-med CPD at the College of Naturopathic Medicine (read here).
My most recent qualification is a Masters in Health & Wellbeing with distinction from University of Highlands & Islands. This reflects my commitment to delivering evidence-based therapies. Building a bridge between theory and practice, I work with my hands, my head and my heart to deliver person-centred treatments to my clients.
How does Jewels Therapies promote health & improve quality of life'?
1. I have developed a person-centred approach, delivering bespoke treatments for individual clients
2. I facilitate relaxation and stress-relief through therapeutic body work
3. I promote an empowered state of being through connection to the body
4. I nurture the therapeutic relationship for optimum outcomes
5. I provide a therapeutic and relaxing environment
My work with vulnerable people in social care has developed essential therapeutic skills such as empathy and listening which have potent healing potential within the therapeutic relationship. My multi-faceted work in social care, therapeutics and research allows me to fully explore both the theoretical and practical application of complementary therapies.
